Double Time in Townsville
Jayden Ojeda in the JAYCO Nissan Altima will finally take off again with both Round 2 and 3 of the 2021 Dunlop Super2 Series to be held over back to back weekends in Townsville.
With May’s Winton SuperSprint postponed the Super2 series drivers have had to wait over four months for action. When Jayden and the Dunlop Super2 drivers roll out for first practice on Friday at the NTI Townsville 500, over 130 days will have passed since Round 1 in Bathurst.
Surprisingly, Jayden is the only driver in the top two tiers of Supercars who is based in Sydney, so weeks ago he had to make an early departure from driver training work in Cooma and motored across the border, to ensure he would not get caught out with any border restrictions. After travelling to Melbourne, he then flew to the Gold Coast, ironically to be caught in the Southeast Queensland lockdown.
“I was meant to be working there until Friday, then Wednesday I got word from team owner Matt White, and I shot out and got to Melbourne, because it looked like it was going poorly in Sydney, and then from Melbourne I flew up to Gold Coast,” recounted Ojeda.
“You just don’t know in these strange times, working in the Snowy Mountains one day, on the sunny Gold Coast a few days later” Jayden said. “It has been some sort of trip to get here, now I am super excited to have back to back race weekends to make it all worthwhile” he added.
Jayden believes the opportunity for the series to compete in back to back events in Townsville will be beneficial.
“It’s going to be a bit different to go from no racing for five months, to then doing two race weekends back to back. The chance to contest two rounds in as many weeks at the same venue will provide valuable experience. It’s really good being in the car constantly and it helps us learn how we can improve racing at the same track week after week.” Ojeda said.
“Hopefully at Townsville we can have a bit of luck go our way and fight up the front where I think we belong. We want to improve on our Bathurst weekend, we want to be fighting for the title at the end of the series” he added.
Ojeda was last year’s leading rookie in the Dunlop Super2 Championship and remains with the team which has won the past two series titles, MW Motorsport, for 2021.

The 2021 Dunlop Super2 Series season will resume this weekend at the NTI Townsville 500. Cars will roll out for Practice 1 on Friday at 9:55am AEST. The event will be broadcast live on Foxtel and will be streamed on Kayo and will be broadcast live and free on Seven.
